max_len_tokens
if we need to generate 1 token, with len(query) = 256 + len(document)=1024 + constant instuction prompt, what would be the correct max_len_tokens size?
If 256 and 1,024 are token counts, count the complete formatted input before choosing the cap. With the default instruction at revision e61197e, my synthetic 256-token query + 1,024-token document became 1,352 input tokens. That 72-token difference includes instructions and formatting; it is not a constant for arbitrary text or instructions.
I also executed the Transformers recipe's unchanged process_inputs: cap 1,280 removed 72 content tokens; cap 1,352 removed none. Adding only its 48 prefix/suffix tokens still removed 24 content tokens.
Tokenizer-only example using the pinned repo's query/document template:
from transformers import AutoTokenizer
t = AutoTokenizer.from_pretrained("Qwen/Qwen3-Reranker-0.6B", revision="e61197ed45024b0ed8a2d74b80b4d909f1255473")
q, d = " ".join(["q"] * 256), " ".join(["d"] * 1024)
messages = [{"role": "query", "content": q}, {"role": "document", "content": d}]
ids = t.apply_chat_template(messages, tokenize=True, return_dict=False)
assert isinstance(ids, list) and all(isinstance(i, int) for i in ids)
print(len(t.encode(q, add_special_tokens=False)), len(t.encode(d, add_special_tokens=False)), len(ids))
# 256 1024 1352
Replace q and d with your actual texts and count again. If you generate one output token, reserve that separately from the input count; max_new_tokens controls new output tokens. The card's direct Transformers scorer reads logits without generation.
Checked with Transformers 5.15.0: six synthetic tokenizer/truncation cases and batch padding. No weights, inference, vLLM/serving, quality or fresh installation were tested.
